Faculty of Engineering, University of Bengkulu held a National Seminar on “Civil Engineering and Built Environment”. The speakers for this seminar were Prof. Mukhtasor, Ph.D (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November), Assoc.Prof. Andri Kusbiantoro,Ph.D (University Malaysia Pahang), Annisa Edriani, S.T.,M.Sc (Universitas Podomoro) and Mukhlis Islam,S.T., M.T (Universitas Bengkulu).
The seminar was conducted on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the main meeting room of University of Bengkulu. In his presentation, Prof. Mukhtasor, said that development activities must consider their impacts in future. Therefore, development activities have to based on sustainable principles. He also said there are three aspects of development to be noted, i,e. social capital, natural capital, and artificial capital.
The other speaker on this seminar Assoc.Prof. Andri Kusbiantoro highlighted that the world of engineering currently has vibrant research on eco-friendly developments. We have to prevent negative impacts of developments to environment. Many countries have experienced a various negative impacts due to environmental disasters. Therefore, a long term solutions are needed and we have to avoid a short term thinking to solve problems.
Similarly, Ms. Annisa Edriani raised the same point, but from a slightly different view. As in general developing countries still focus on economic growths, environmental aspects often are neglected, In contrast, in developed countries, environmental conservation has become a major concern. However, developing countries should start to do the right things for sustainable development and environment.
A last presenter, Mr. Mukhlis Islam further discussed sustainable development from the technical point of view, especially building developments. He said that in general when buildings are damaged, they will be directly unloaded. New buildings are then installed. In one of the case studies that he conducted, the building were still possible to be applied a special improvement for further uses. So, it means that there are many ways to do sustainable development and environmentally friendly. In this case, we do not need to waste and using more materials as long as we can still use and improve the quality of the buildings.
